Phocomelia is an extremely rare congenital disorder involving malformation of the limbs (dysmelia). Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire coined the term in 1836.
It expresses itself in taking action against the odds, and displaying courage and resoluteness in the face of adversity; in other words, deciding on a course of action, and then adhering to it even if repeated failures ensue. Dysmelia is a widely accepted term used to define a group of malformations in which there is hypoplasia, and partial or total aplasia of the tubular bones of the extremities, ranging from isolated peripheral hypoplasia to complete loss of the extremity. The condition is commonly known as limb deficiency or limb reduction defect. dysmelia in American English. (dɪsˈmiliə) sustantivo.
